    Homeschool Journey

    The Homeschool Journey:

Do You Avoid Detours or Take

    Too Many Side Trips?

Homeschool activities can lead us down the wrong path if we are not careful.  Discover if your homeschool planning is sending you on the wrong route.

Are you satisfied with the direction your homeschooling is headed?  If not, could it be because you are overbooked or wandering aimlessly?

Let us look at the three types of homeschool moms: the one who has her family overbooked; the one who wanders aimlessly; and the one who takes the middle road.

An overbooked mom has a full itinerary with too many required lessons.  She has good intentions since she wants her children to be well educated before leaving her tutelage.  However, her schedule is too full with completing every lesson available.   She avoids taking detours by not personalizing her children’s learning experience and does not include field trips or any other enriching activities.  She often misses teachable moments because they are not on her itinerary.

The overbooked mom is so intent on the destination she misses out on the beauty of homeschooling.  This mom and her children are heading towards burnout.  She needs to get back on track.

The wandering mom loves road trips for she is always going from one activity to another.    Her philosophy is to have fun.  Therefore, she is involved in more than one homeschool co-op and enjoys impromptu activities.  She likes trying new things and as a result over packs with numerous curricula and spontaneous purchases.   Because of her over-committed schedule and lack of planning, she leaves behind a trail of unfinished lessons and projects as well as unused curriculum.  This leads to dead ends and a waste of her time and money.

The wondering mom often feels unfocused and worries if her children are learning what they should.  This mom is heading towards a path of frustration and exhaustion.  She is lost and in need of homeschool help.

The mom who takes the middle road has learned how to balance her schedule.  With her advance planning, she determines what and how much her children should learn during the school year.  She occasionally takes the scenic route by supplementing the lessons with appropriate activities.

The middle-of-the-road mom knows when she needs to limit the side trips and when to take a detour.  This mom is heading towards an enjoyable journey.

Do you wonder how to make your homeschooling more pleasant?  Keep it fun and simple, use advance planning and keep your schedule in balance.  You do not need to do it all to ensure your children receive a quality education.  They will learn without doing every lesson or attending every field trip.
